Coming from Dorchester and the east there is a chance to experience one of the great sights of Lyme Bay and the coastal sweep of the 96 mile Jurassic Coast. On the outskirts of Winterborne Abbas on the A35 take the left slip road to Portesham and Abbotsbury. Just after the top of the long hill towards Portesham there is a one lane road signposted Gorwell. This will take you down Bishop’s Way and into Abbotsbury after a splendid sight of Portland on your left and St Catherine’s Chapel ahead of you. Continuing on the B3157 there is a pull-in parking space at the top of Abbotsbury Hill with views of Portland, the Fleet and in the distance the white headland of White Nothe. Past the Abbotsbury Castle the iron-age hillfort on your right the vista opens up for a grand view of the western Jurassic Coast and on a clear day the sight of Start Point in Devon, some 52 miles away. Past the Bull Inn at Swyre and Burton Bradstock you’ll find a left turn to West Bay after the entrance to the Bridport and West Dorset Golf Club.
